Brands for ‘Him’at Weekend Window

The consumerist market is changing by leaps and bounds in the recent times. The metro-sexual men, that were once seen only in GQ and Esquire magazines and later in highly glamorized movies of Karan Johar and Farhan Akhtar , are now out there on the streets in our very own Ahmedabad. Its a visual delight to spot well-dressed men in the streets of Ahmedabad.

So we decided to dedicate Day -2 at Weekend Window only to Stylish Men and Men’s products available at the 3 day flea market. While most of the stalls at Weekend Window catered to women audience, there were a handful of them addressing the other half of the population.

These are the Men’s brands that we loved at Weekend Window’s 10th Edition.

Tie hub

Vishal Khetani and Riddhi started this quirky brand about two years back. Based out of Mumbai, Tie Hub is one stop destination for stylish men’s accessories including neckties, bow ties, cufflinks, scarves, belts, suspenders and lapel pins. Oh, they do have colourful kitsch socks as well. They have interesting real watch cufflinks priced at around INR 5000. The ties have interesting machine weaves whereas the bow-ties have quirky wooden frames like that of scissors as well. Considering the wedding season, they shared that ties were selling like hot-cakes. They are a high end label starting from 300 onward till 6000.

69th avenue

Alay Lavsi, the founder of Ahmedabad based brand 69th Avenue, stocks men’s accessories and fashion products since last 1.5 years. 69th Avenue is a lifestyle brand that caters to the fun and unusual designs. They specialise in bow-ties, cufflinks, ties and pocket squares besides socks and handkerchiefs. They have interesting cufflinks in shape of lego, scooter, eagle, duck , dice and more. For the handloom lover men, Alay has patola pocket squares as well. They are modestly priced between 499 to 1899 only.

Abha and Laksh, Mumbai based designers of Desi Hangover, specialize in footwear made from buffalo leather that is specially tanned with vegetable dyes. It is ergonomically created keeping in mind arch of feet and have suede inner lining to absorb the sweat. The Men’s shoes are priced at Rs. 2000, a perfect buy for the ones who love to wear leather mojdi /loafers.

Sparrow Designs

Parth Kaneriya and Charuta Bhatt started  Sparrow Design Firm about 2 years back. Essentially a design company, the duo designs notebooks, mugs and Tee-shirts that are unisex. Available in eclectic prints, Sparrow Designs even had a Tee-shirt that flaunted NaMo in retro mode. These tee-shirts are the ones for easy breezy weekends. Priced at   750, these are good gifting options too.

Raj Thakkar, Harsh Hudda and Vidit Bhatt started ‘Chokdi’ in 2014, though I wonder where is the fourth partner, if the name is ‘Chokdi’ ! This contemporary brand is working towards reviving old art forms in new-age fashion through their range of Tee-shirts. Having displayed at Comic Con, they showcased range of Tee-shirts with Batman and Joker done in cross-stitch. Sherlock fans, you too can find your favourite character here. Warli art is another form that they have started experimenting with. Priced from 800 onwards, they are ‘Cool’ buy for the ones looking for style with twist.

Ray & Dale

Ray & Dale, a Mumbai based brand was established in 2014 by Rayan. It was founded as a luxury e-boutique with a simple purpose of meeting the needs of ‘The emerging fashion conscious Indian man’. They design quirky shirts, ties, bow ties, cufflinks, pocket squares and lapel pins. Their shirts were priced at INR 1000 only whereas the average range of their other products was also 1000. One could check interesting lapel pins there, in form of tiny spectacles and gold & silver Ties.

Ahmdedabad based brand Beardo has been making a lot of noise since quite some time, especially during the No-shave November month. Ashutosh Valani & Priyank Shah started this brand under Zed Lifestyle Pvt Ltd after understanding the shift of metrosexual men towards growing beard. They have tapped the huge market of grooming products for beard by creating products like beard wash, beard fragrance oil, hair growth oil, moustache growth roll on , hair wax , moustache & beard wax. We found interesting product called  Godfather Beardo oil as well.  Their products are priced between Rs 245 to Rs 750.

Weekend Window : The Happiest Flea Market in Ahmedabad

What started as an outdoor bazaar in Paris and  termed as “Flea Market”(literal translation of the French marche aux puces,  named after those pesky little parasites that infested the upholstery of old furniture brought out for sale) is now an upscale urban affair in India.

While earlier all cities in India had their own share of ‘Shukrawari’ or ‘Resale Market’,the concept of urban ‘Flea Markets’ started taking shape in India around 2010, mostly in metros like Mumbai and Bangalore. The idea of the modern-day ‘Flea Market’ is to provide an experiential shopping atmosphere.

How could the entrepreneurial ‘Gujju land’ be left behind?

2013 saw the rise of first of its kind of urban markets in Ahmedabad in the form of ‘Weekend Window’– a carnival experience designed and curated by Meera Ambasana Shah and Harshit Shah. They  ‘Weekend Window’ as a classy answer to the  famously blingy Grand Rakhi Melas that were set in the city’s shopping space.

Meera Ambasana Shah & Harshit Shah – Founders, Weekend Window

Neither Meera nor Harshit have any formal education in arts or design background, however they have a sharp business acumen to curate the right emerging brands for the novelty of the shoppers. They tapped in the potential of starting the culture of ‘Carnival experience’ in Ahmedabad from their frequent travels across the country and abroad. Having witnessed night markets in Goa and Bangkok where one could find niche & limited edition products from budding artists, the duo felt that Ahmedabad has none of this kind of experience.

An idea that originated from travel expeditions got its first taste of success in its maiden edition in 2013.From 14 brands exhibiting in its first season to now 140 brands in its 9th season, Weekend Window has come a long way. There are exhibitors coming from around 20 cities in this edition, quite a feat, I say. They still travel to the exhibitions across the country to understand the trends in this space and keep innovating to maintain the freshness of the concept.

Those exhibitors who had exhibited in the earlier editions have still stuck on to this ‘High end Happiest Flea market’ in Ahmedabad.

Quality speaks.

Collaboration is the key to modern-day success. No wonder then that in this 9th edition, Ahmedabad would witness a ‘Grand Season’ with associations like Foodaholics in Ahmedabad and Comedy Factory. There would be a ‘Kids corner’, ‘Foodie zone’, ‘Entertainment zone’ and few workshops to keep audience from all age groups interested.

Where :Karnavati Club lawns, S.G Highway, Ahmedabad, Gujarat

When: 13th -15th May 2016
